Instead of a Sorting Hat, I was thinking that we could have a Sorting Sword, or possibly a Sorting Bow. Here is my idea for the Sorting Sword:
The sword is neither too heavy or too light for anybody. It always modifies its weight for the comfort of the person wielding it. A target is set up, and the person slashes it. The sword will sort according to the power of the blow (only in RP, they will have to answer questions to truthfully get sorted). Instead of yelling out a house, the sword glows the main color of the person's new house.
Like the sword, the bow is neither to easy to draw or too hard to draw. It modifies itself for the comfort of the person drawing it. Instead of hitting a target, the person draws the bow (without an arrow), and lets go of the bow string. The bow will judge their character by their release and draw (again, they will do questions.) Instead of yelling out a house, the bow jumps out of the wielder's hands, draws and arrow, and shoots it through the building, the arrow glowing the color of the house.
Again, it can totally be modified, but I was wondering which of the two looks and sounds better. Preferably, to me, I like the Sorting Sword better, but it is up to you.

I like both ideas, really. If I had to choose one, it would be the sorting sword.

I like the bow idea, but instead of the bow glowing. Wouldn't it be more ethical (and safe to other students) if it shot at a target. Like 6 targets somewhere...or
Theres a blank target infront of you, you shoot at it and it glows the colour of your house?
Or all the targets are infron of you, one for each house. The arrow is fired at a blank one dead straight infront and the arrow swerves to meet a target?
Just a couple of ideas.

I really like the idea of the bow getting fired at one of the six targets, swerving to meet the one that represents the house dead on. That is creative!

Shot gets fired. Hit sthe target and it glows your house colours.
